Portage 4/18

Fished out of Portage from about sunrise to 11.  Ended up landing 8 coho (1 short) and 2 lakers.  Fished 4 of 8 polls targeting kings and the other 4 targeting cohos. First 2 cohos came on red black squiggle thin fish. Then after that 6 inch orange spin doctors with green/black flies turned on, landed 4 on the flies and probably lost 6 or 7 other ones, lot of short hits today.  Other cohos came on 7 color with a blue dolphin mag spoon. Fished mainly 45 to 50 feet going 2.5-2.8 mph.

Do you mainly run the Baby Spin Doctors with flies off of riggers, dipsies, leadcore or flat lines with a weight attached? I’m starting to use them more and am having a hard time getting them to go. 

Nice job and thanks for the report. We fished out to Portage today too and landed two nice coho. We lost three more. We also had a large brown trout in the net at the back of the boat and it somehow managed to flip out of the net and swim away. The rigger cable had something to do with it. It was the biggest brown I’ve seen while trolling and the only one I’ve caught in the last three years. It was probably like 12 lbs or so. Beautiful fish. We would’ve let it go anyway, but it would have been nice to snap a picture. There’s at least one brown in southern Lake Michigan.

I think we had 4-5 nice browns weighed in at the Coho Cabin Fever Tournament - somewhat surprising and nice to se.  To answer your question on baby spin doctors, you can use them on everything, rigger, dipsy, LC, CU, keel weight.  With that being said, I dont use them much and therefore dont catch much on them lol.  Other guys have tremendous success so hopefully they can give you some tips.

This honestly was our first time running 6 inch spindoctors but was very happy with what we saw. We had 2 out and wished we had 2 more for our other 2 coho rods. With us running 2.5-3 most of the day looking for a king or 2 we decided to put them on over dodgers because from what I believe anything over 2.5 on a dodger and it stops dodging and starts spinning. If we were running slower we probably would have left on the dodgers, but after what we saw yesterday we might start experimenting early spring next year with them when running slower. We ran ours with a 5/8 keel weight 20 to 30 feet behind the board (Recommended to us by Slez a couple years back for dodgers).
