Salmon run

Post by Trent »

Good morning to all! I know the near shore waters are still in the high 60s down to 53 fow according to the Michigan City bouy but I'm curious if anyone has seen any good king action close to shore or in the creeks and rivers?

I assume not but last years run started and I never saw much posted so I'm just checking.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Its almost October 1st and my son and I will be switching from fishing to hunting!

Sounds like it has been very slow for boaters due to warmer water - hearing a lot about marking fish but not getting them to bite

Creek guys are doing ok, talked to a few catching good numbers of kings, and hearing of a few caught in the East Chicago harbor as well

From a boater standpoint in Portage it has been extremely slow. I have only heard or seen a few kings caught since middle august in close, way different than last year. Water to just recently was low 70's top to bottom, they could be there but hard to get them to bite in that temp. Winds messed up our trolling near shore for staging fish this year it would seem, I had high expectations for this years run too.

I tried 2 times, aug 18th and sept 2nd both usually pretty good times with 0 fish to show for it in close, ended up going to 185 fow and still not a ton out there. Gave up and haven't been out since that day, I know a lot of people have done the same hence no reports this time.

I have been out several times also. 0 fish to show for it. The boat will be coming out and going to storage very soon.

Over in ec I have a few buddies who have trolled several times with nothing but a catfish to show, as far as in the harbor I have only seen a few porpoise while getting the boat ready in the morning. I tried casting several times with nothing to show for my efforts in the harbor….. pretty disappointing fall for certain.

There were a few out today outside of portage trolling and some casting.  Fish are there still, couple of the casters reported them jumping earlier in the morning, guys trolling were marking but couldn't get any to bite.  Water is still warm.
