2024 Port to Port Challenge - June 8th

This tournament Stevens Marine, should be supported by as many of our fishermen as possible.
My wife and I came up with the idea, a way to promote the Mixsawbah hatchery. Harry and I sat down and discussed my idea and the reason to support the hatchery. At that point Harry asked to move this in to the Stevens Marine tournament.
Why should I support this tournament or the hatchery?
Mixsawbah is Indiana's King factory. This hatchery is responsible for stocking kings in all 3 of our Indiana stocking locations. It is now 50+ years old. The biofilter which is the heart of the Mixsawbah hatchery is still the original. The biofilter needs to be updated new and infrastructure work to be done associated with the biofilter has to take place. The cost for this project is approx.4 million dollars. That is a big lift for this state to cover. Federal assistance dollars would be needed to accomplish this task. We need help from our local state politicians. Have you written them?
In 2005 Mixsawbah was down for nearly a year for work to be done.  Steel pipes that were under the concrete were already giving way and had to be replaced. Indiana at that time came up with 500,000 dollars of state money and the rest was secured with federal assistance. If we want the best from our hatcheries we have to make sure the state politicians understand the need for this work to be accomplished. Over time many of the jobs that used to exist in the fisheries side of the DNR have been eliminated. Indiana no longer has a fisheries chief position. That position was there for other jobs that had to get state funding to start them in the past. Indiana no longer has a person in position to move the ball forward for us.
In 2016 Seagrant did a study on what Indiana along with Illinois was worth in the fishing side of things. Indiana's worth yearly of annual income is around 15-18 million dollars. With approx.171 jobs that are involved in the LaPorte, Porter and Lake counties.
We need to make sure that Mixsawbah gets the items they need and a biofilter replaced. The groups Lake County Fish and game along with Hoosier Coho Club helped to secure alittle over 5 thousand dollars to help where they could when the hatcheries budget is tight. After the brown trout stocking this spring at EC the Bodine stocking truck broke down. It is or was in bad shape. Scuttle butt says that the state is securing a new stocking truck, if this holds true it's great news. The hatcheries are always going to need some help and assistance. Even if you do not fish tournaments please take a look at this one. Your money is going to go towards helping our hatchery, and when we help them we are helping ourselves.

2024 Port to Port Challenge - June 8th

What makes this tournament so much fun is there is no pressure and everyone is a winner. The modest entry fee goes to help the few dedicated employees at the Mixsawbah fish hatchery raise, feed and take care of our world class fishery we sometimes take for granted. This is an opportunity to have fun and give back at the same time.
Each port fishes as a group, we then pick our best fish from each species and take them to the weigh in.
Have a smaller boat and worried about the weather?  Stay close to shore and fish for Steelhead and Coho.  Anyone can contribute to the catch.
After the weigh in the hard-working Coho Club throws a nice party giving everyone a place to relax and talk fishing.

Harry would like to see this event grow and is truly honored to support such a worthwhile event.

Great. If I were feeling better I'd be fishing for sure. I've been battling low iron levels for a year and a half now and still not sure why.
