300 Copper Reel
I have a 300ft plus length of AFW bare copper wire on a spool. I am thinking about putting it on a reel but I am not sure what size will work. I plan on using 100 yds of 40# braid backing and 20 or so feet of 20# fluorocarbon leader. What is the smallest reel size that will hold all this line? I am wanting to use an Okuma reel.

Hey Don, a cv55 will be enough to hold 300ft of 45lb copper with good backing with braid or mono. Mike

After talking to one of the guys at Tackle Haven I bought one of the new Okuma Magda DXT line counter reels for the job It was a size 45 reel. Spooled on 200 yards of 40# braid, the 300 ft of copper and 20 plus ft of 20# fluorocarbon. It all fit very well with some room on the spool to spare.
The new DXT has very good improvements over the old Magda Pro. Better gearing, better line counter (same as the Coldwater line) , new shape, and a reel handle engaging clutch. It has a drag system with carbon disks in it also. It works like a Convector and up. Seems like a good reel.
