Hot bait

Anyone having a few bucks to blow on lures might want to consider this one. It's no Red Artie but it has been a solid producer this spring on shallow downriggers and behind Dipsey Divers, especially in the cold, gray water. It's not good for catch and release since it doesn't wiggle and the fish can swim up behind it to catch it and they don't bite down until the blade is beating on their nose. It's like a regular Aglia, but now has a "peanut fly" instead of squirrel fur on the treble. It's available in several colors, but this hot orange has been solid. Probably can't get 'em locally but you can order them from Mepps.com. Called Flashabou Aglia - size 4 and 5 is perfect for cohos.

I thought you had whipped up a homemade/custom spinner when you had mentioned the peanut flie Aglia in your reports. I can see potetial in that bait, I’ve got some UV flashabou and spinner blade stickers laying around and a stack of orange #4 spinner blades. Might have to bend/tie a few up.

I did not have any Mepps Aglia spinners in my boxes of lures but I did have several Blue Fox super Vibrax spinners. A blaze orange #5 to my luck also. I tied some red/orange color flashabou along with some muticolored flashbou to make a peanut fly trailer for the spinner. Looks good to me I will give it a shot next time I am up there, hopefully soon. I snapped a few pics of it.

I can still remember when we first started catching coho, one spring the mepps spinner with a purple hair tail was the hot ticket in spring and another year it was the mepps with the rubber minnow that was hot. I think the main reason for getting away from spinners was line twist. With all the good terminal ball bearing swivels now, that may eliminate some of that issue.

Do you think a bead chain is better than a bearing swivel at preventing line twist using a large spinner?

I don't have problems with ball bearing swivels. Never used bead chain swivels.

The tuna bait rigs I use come with bead chains or barrel chains to prevent the line twist when using them as they are designed to spin when moved through the water. The setup works very well is why I asked. I can see how a lesser quality swivel can cause line twist. The problem when using chains is you almost need a leader tied to the lure to hide the chain.

I've used bead chains with the Brads cut plug things. I'm much less than sold on them partially because the beads didn't really do the job and I've ended up with nylon brillo pads. I did catch a sheephead with one of the plugs once. I did catch a small king with one once, as well. On a day when the fish were hot and every rod caught fish with more conventional lures.
