Had the opportunity again to fish on my buddy Spoonfed’s boat. We got a late start and were going out as angry pirate was going in. We decided to start trolling at the exit of the marina. We were done fishing before we got near the Gary light. Thinfish in a watermelon color 50-75 feet from the board did the best for us taking 4 of our 10 fish. Couple fish came on a peanut fly behind a small orange flasher on the rigger 15 foot down.

Nice job but I have a couple of questions. I’m from central Indiana and have only trolled the deeper water. What port do you guys go out of and how far from shore are you trolling? Thanks for the advice

Great job John. Glad you guys did well. To bad we did not get the chance to talk at the ramp.

This time of year the two best places to launch are portage and east Chicago. If you go out of east Chicago you have good fishing just outside the harbor. Fish the wall on your left going out into the lake. You can follow that wall all the way around into the ship canal on the other side of the wall which has probably 8 hot water discharges in it. Gary is approx 7 miles away. Portage you have the dounut which is approx 4 miles to the east. The mouth of the ditch just outside the harbor. Gary is approx 7 miles from Gary.

Hi Briand. I have only fished out of two ports. Pastric’s Marina (East Chicago) and Portage. We are fishing pretty close to shore. We stayed in 30 to 40 feet of water. The later in the year it gets, the farther out you have to go. Hope this helps.
