Does anyone use this type of release? They came with my boat but either I don't know how to use them or there is no way to pre-load your pole with tension. Any help or information is appreciated.

Looks like a Black's down rigger release. They were made for the fishermen to twist the line,4-8 times with the eye to go into the release.

I use these and they work just as lickety-split states I personally like these releases best.

I use another manufacturers variant, but the concept is the same. They work great.

I use a blacks release also. You can also tightened the release down and and use a rubber band in the release if you like that more.

A newer design is a CHAMBERLAIN RELEASE FOR DOWNRIGGERS, this has 2 adjustments 1 for the rod and 1 for the fish, works good for small fish.
