Lake Erie

Post by Thundercat »

Spent a week at Lake Erie on South Bass Island, fishing Canada waters. Fished Saturday evening 7 keepers, and limited on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, took it easy on Friday (fishing several hours in the afternoon for perch south of Green Island). Fished 32 to 35 foot break on Wagon Wheel reef which is west of Pelee Island. Trolled worm harnesses off of large planer boards using 3 oz tee weights 65 feet back and 2 downriggers ,120 feet back and 3 feet from bottom. Days when windy (3 to 4 foot waves) drifted using may fly rigs.

There is a large number of walleye of 13 1/2 to 16 inch, great 2015 hatch. In Canada there is no size limit however since we brought the walleye back to Ohio waters the fish have to be 15 inch. Several days we were done in less then 3 hours. We probably thru back 20 walleye each day just under 15 inch walleye. Our largest walleye was 28 inch, last year's trip we caught a 29 1/2 and a 31 1/4 inch walleye.

In early June of this year 4 of us fished a charter using may fly rigs on a 6 count for 2 days and thru back about the 1st 20 to 30 walleyes each day before keeping a fish. There were more fish over 15 inches in July

Next year I can see limits coming in several hours as these 2015 fish will be well over 15 inch limit and will provide good fishing the next 6 years.

Great report Bruce,

We love heading out there anytime we can. Your right about the next few years, and size. They grow really fast out there.
