The new system is much more advanced and flexible. It also can use larger, higher quality images. So I recommend to use a new one, even if it is a higher quality rehash of the image you are already using.

Jeff, just an FYI I did attempt to update my Avatar and received this notice.

Error : Avatar file size exceed limit allowed by configuration.

I was attempting to upload via mobile and it allowed me to upload a different avatar taken with my phone as well. One of the photos was landscape and one was portrait orientation. This might have been the issue?

And I guess it turned the vertical photo to horizontal...quite possible it's user error.

I have the upload size max for avatars set at 2MB. If you are using a phone, that might pose a problem unless you can use a lower resolution view. Also phones do not send photos with information to tell websites which way is "up" because they use a gyro so the image can be flipped when viewing on the phone. Generally the picture has to be landscape to be shown on the site correctly. Either that or upload to a computer and modify its orientation.

The key on phones is to always take pictures landscape (phone sideways) and figure which way is right side up and upside down. Depends on the phone.

You can send pictures to me at admin@ this site (I am not showing actual email link for spam reasons) and can modify them and send them back for use if you so wish.

I just uploaded a couple pictures that I took in portrait mode and the site had them properly orientated.

I then double checked a picture I put on last night that was twisted at first and it also uploaded in the same orientation it was shot in and did not default to landscape mode. (iPhone 7) Maybe the update solved this issue for some.

Not sure. maybe the update and perhaps newer phones are starting to tag the original orientations in the image? Not sure.

It didn't work last night on the fly picture. I had to import/export on Lightroom mobile to fix it. I uploaded the original again today and the photo was vertical. You fixed it and didn't even know it. Lol.

it is really a complicated subject if you research it. Unfortunately their is no true standard today. Smart phones behave different than computers and both have refused to adapt to each other, at least not completely. Hopefully the technologies are starting to merge.

I just did a test and subsequently deleted the post and attachments.

What I found with the Iphone 7 (and likely all iphones) is that only pictures laken landscape (phone sideways) with volume buttons down showed the correct orientation. Greg - seems yours happend to work correctly with a portrait shot from last night which I have no explanation for.........lol

looks like you can also only manage / delete attachments when on a computer and not on the phone.
