Has anyone been hearing of any Coho or Browns caught from shore in the Portage area? I'm going to give it a try tomorrow and Tuesday evenings. Of it's a complete waste of time might try ice fishing

I've seen some pics on facebook recently and heard some reports that there are coho being caught at MC and Portage, and in the lower reaches of Trail Creek and Burns Ditch

Not consistently hot and heavy but some people are scratching out some decent catches on the right day it sounds like

Lots of pack ice around - depending on the wind direction it's in the harbors

They’re there. I fished Wednesday at Portage, MC today (Friday). Small hooks, light leaders and skein on slip rigs on the bottom is best. I did get one coho on a blade bait at MC today and saw on caught on shrimp. There’s still enough ice around that you have to play the wind. Portage had a lot more ice around today than earlier in the week. The pier was wide open this afternoon, but there’s a ton of ice between the coast guard station and the draw bridge at MC. The draw bridge is closed so you have the drive around back by the blue chip and come in the back way to get to Washington Park. The rocks at Portage and the pier at MC are heavily iced.

The couple days I planned on going didn't work out. I did get to Portage yesterday morning for about an hour. Through crankbaits, spinners and spoons. Right before I had to leave I did get 1 on a silver and orange K.O Wobbler. I'm sure these high winds the next few days will screw things up for a while.

FYI to anybody looking to fish Friday or this weekend - Michigan City is 100% locked up right now. Pack ice and newly formed sheet ice. The forecast for Thursday (tonight) is 22 for a low with light and variable winds, so the sheet ice in the turning basin up to the drawbridge is going to get thicker. Friday has light winds as well. Looking like a slow start to the spring coho season. I doubt things will be fishable for at least a week or even 2, especially since there are single digit lows forecast for Sunday and Monday

Well it's not a coho but was a lot of fun to catch. Got this one floating squid under a bobber.
