I would have to say the good near shore coho bite has come to an end in Indiana water. But there maybe a few left around still.

I'm going out in the AM out of Portage. Just going out to go out. Gonna bring some bass rigs, couple trolling rigs, see if I can hit a king or some smallies, maybe some lakers.... rather be on Erie crushing some eyes

If you can fish offshore in Erie for meat, why can't you fish offshore for fish fun to catch on Lake Michigan?

This isn't pertaining to anyone in this post... it amazes me how many guys I know with smaller boats will run to Erie for the weekend but won't consider running out deep on Lake Michigan.

I have a lot of time on both bodies of water, we used to slip our boat on Erie from April-June, and Erie makes me way more uncomfortable than Lake Michigan ever could.

X2 on what safecracker said. I only put a life jacket on one time in my life and it was on Erie 30+ years ago. Yes lake Michigan gets bad but you usually can have a little distance between waves. Seems like on Erie your getting hit sometimes from 3 different angles and as your coming down one side of a wave the next is breaking over your bow. West side of
Erie is very shallow compared to lake Michigan. Waves build fast but will lay down alot quicker with a wind change then what we see here.

So I agree with you guys on Erie I under stand it's shallow and that waves build faster but here is the difference for me. 1/4 mile of shore jigging in 12-18 ft of water is a lot better than when shit hits the fan than deep in Lake Michigan. Also, I'm no stranger for going out deep but this year, so far, the lake hasn't been the most friendly for going out deep in smaller boats plus a lot of guys with smaller boats aren't set up to run a lot of deep lines with wire and copper set ups like guys with bigger rigs. One more thing to keep in mind is on wind blown days you can go to Detroit river and vertical jig as well and not fight the winds and waves. All in all there are pro's and con's I fish Lake Michigan way more than I finish Erie but I do enjoy eating walleye a whole lot.

Everything isn't always down deep when fishing offshore on the southern end. We usually have a good steelhead bite going in the top 20 feet of the water column even though we are in 100-120 feet of water. Most of the time nothing we have out is deeper than 45' - to keep it away from the Lake Trout. Sometimes depending on the temp break the riggers will be down 55-60.

We have partnered up with other boats unsure of running offshore that were hesitant to do it solo. . We are in an open bow boat too so we need to go before it gets real bad also.

As long as you have the fuel range and the right day it is doable. The problem I see with some small boats is the size of the fuel tank and guys pushing the limits. Running hard in rougher water burns way more fuel that some would suspect.

I have a 38 gal. tank in my new boat. 2016 suzuki 140 4 stroke which has been real good on gas, and a 2017 suzuki 9.9 kicker that ties into my main. I've ran to deep out of Wisconsin area where the trip isn't as far. But never launching out of Portage. How do you think that would fair as far as fuel range?

Would do you just fine. As Safecracker pointed out and others, you just pick your day. Watch the weather, and try to double up with another boat thats also going to go out. Sounds like you have a great rig set up. Deep water is alot of fun at times, and fishing can be really good. But,as long as safety stays as the #1 item, then have some fun and try something new. Weather men still make mistakes but it is sure much more reliable then in years past.
