All the boats I've owned trolled too fast at idle. I've always used a Happy Troller (trolling plate) with excellent results. I've never forgotten to lift it at the end of the day. How many of you guys forget to pull the buckets or drift socks? Regardless of how, you need to slow 'er down.
Here's a new guy in the biz with a hi-tech trolling plate. Interesting, you set your throttle, then fine tune the speed by raising and lowering the trolling plate.

Guys, thanks for all the great tips! This has been a real education! I'll be taking a closer look to see if I have an engine issue and I'm now weighing my options on the slow down methods. Seems like having something on hand to slow things down when needed, socks, buckets, drag plate system etc. would make a lot of sense. Maybe an inner tube I can drag the beer cooler in would help! :P

If you are idling in neutral at around 700rpm when you just slide it into gear that should drop you down in RPM due to the load you have just put on your engine. If your RPM goes higher you have an issue with your cable adjustment. Another thing to consider is with the newer motors there are computer control boards that will tune or compensate for other issues that may affect idle speed. Example, my Mercury will idle faster when I lose an ignition module compensating for the dropped cylinder.
