Having a difficult time finding anything positive to say about what has happened in Indiana related to Chinook stocking. We used to also stock kings in the St. Joe.
My understanding is 2/3 of the current king population is wild and comes primarily from streams in Michigan. Cuts in areas of Michigan should be expected. Wisconsin put the brakes on cuts 5 years ago. In 2016, the Lake Michigan Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission recommended a 62% chinook stocking reduction. What in the hell happened???? In 2017 Indiana takes a significant cut and Wisconsin ignores the recommendation? In 2018 Indiana once again keeps their stockings low and both Michigan and Wisconsin increase theirs?
Pretty obvious to me where a significant portion of the additional fish allotted to Lake Michigan should go.

This is an excellent conversation full of information that I was not aware of. As a new boat fisherman out of Portage it has led me to wonder what to expect as I try to get started fishing the South End. Since things seem to have changed drastically in the last five years, can one of you veterans give some general advice as to where and when to target fish in the current environment?

Many thanks,
Cory

Like I stated in earlier post, from ice out to mid June coho action with a chance of kings in close from Michigan city to East Chicago. Hit or miss steelhead in early July then lake trout offshore for rest of years. Mike
