Dirty this is exactly the observation I had. The wind flip flopped north to south every few days all April, so what warming we had pushed north and kept our temps low. Then there were the stray reports of pods of fish showing up in Muskegon in April.
My brother and I were talking about our fears the kings would just skip the south end and move into their summer patterns if it kept up, and it seems that's exactly what happened.

I agree.  There are definitely kings here, but not in the numbers we saw the past few years.

We just started fishing for kings last spring, and it was late, and we only had 4 rods, so we really didn't get much, but I do remember days where bites were quite common and we were not that far from shore at this time.

Is this year's pattern more typical like you were saying? Just a few lucky days where there are some numbers, then just a big offshore game for 1 king a trip?

I am still fairly new at the Salmon game but I went at least 2 years before ever catching one King.   A lot of that was learning curve of course but the last two years seemed better than the last 7 that I have been at it for me.

I agree with all above.  What I know is there are tons of Lakers in 75-90 FOW. Less inshore.  Kings are being caught inshore on occasion and offshore in 90 FOW on occasion.  Coho are scattered inshore.  Not sure about offshore.  I am Bluegill fishing this weekend in S. Indiana.  Warm temps forecast.  Another week or two and the inshore bite will be over in my opinion.  Bring out the 300 coppers!  Lol

When you say 90 ft is this past the Michigan/Indiana line?

I think one important thing to consider is that most of the lake never had ice cover. The lake just didn't get as cold as years when 75% of the lake is covered in ice.
