I can't see much advantage to side scan with regards to salmon trolling. The only fish I catch that I mark with electronics are on the riggers. Most of the time when any of the long lines go off the graph is blank.
I do try and take notice of depth of bait balls, fish arcs, and the thermocline later in the year to properly adjust the depth range of the spread.
I think the addition of a temp/speed probe on the downrigger is one of the best additions to make to dial in the presentation.
