Join us for 2 great fishing events in Indiana on February 17th.   First will be the annual Hoosier Coho Club Fish Tales & Tackle Sales Swap Meet from 9AM to 1PM central time at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds.  Then head on down to the Great Lakes Salmon Initiative's 2nd Annual Indiana Great Lakes Fishery Meeting from 2PM to 5PM central time at the Miller Chapter, Izaak Walton League of America in Portage Indiana.  You will get to hear from and speak directly with the fisheries researchers and biologists who manage our Great Lakes fishery.   The GLSI is providing free pizza so we have lunch covered.  Drinks are available for purchase at Izaak Walton League bar on site. All the details for both events are included in the event listings here.  There is also a Bass Pro Shops superstore nearby if you want to stop there for some gear to end the day.   For our Michigan members, this would be a fun road trip to get some deals, get your questions answered about our fishery and get ready for the upcoming fishing season.

You are invited to the 2nd Annual Great Lakes Salmon Initiatives Indiana’s Lake Michigan Fisheries Meeting  February 17th  from 2PM to 5PM CST at the Miller Chapter, Izaak Walton League of America, 1250 Crisman Rd #1231, Portage, Indiana 46368

Hear about the latest information and research for our Lake Michigan salmon and trout fishery.  There will also be an open forum question and answer sessions with all presenters.   Here is the agenda.
Results from the Lake Michigan diet study on what salmon and trout are eating by Dr. Brian Roth, Associate Professor, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University.
Dr. Roth will present results of his multi-year study of the aquatic food web in Lake Michigan and what our salmon and trout are feeding on.
How the states surrounding Lake Michigan cooperate to manage our fishery via the Lake Michigan Committee along with a historical overview and current status of the forage base in Lake Michigan by Jay Wesley, Lake Michigan Basin Coordinator, Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Jay Wesley will explain how the Lake Michigan Committee works together to coordinate fisheries management of Lake Michigan and will also speak on changes and the current status of the forage base and how that affects stocking decisions and overall management of our fishery.
Latest news and information on managing the Indiana waters of Lake Michigan by Ben Dickinson, Lake Michigan Fisheries Biologist for the State of Indiana.
Ben Dickinson will discuss the fisheries management of Indiana waters, stocking plans for 2024, hatchery news and what the future looks like.
Update on Indiana’s first chinook net pen project at the East Chicago Harbor by Captain John Warren
Captain Warren has been leading the effort to establish the first net pen stocking in Indiana. This should help to better acclimate and increase survival of chinook smolts and imprint them to return to the local water and improve both the offshore and on shore fishing for kings.

Hoosier Coho Club Activities for 2024

What the Great Lakes Salmon Initiative is working on for 2024 by Ed Blissick and Ed Erdelac
Ed and Ed will talk review what the GLSI is working on for the coming year.

One of the main goals of this meeting is to give anglers the opportunity to learn more about how fisheries management decisions are made.  Another goal is to create a connection and open dialog between anglers and the professionals who help maintain the Great Lakes fishery we all love.   Bring all the questions you have.  The question and answer sessions will be an important part of this meeting.

The GLSI will be providing pizza for all in attendance and drinks will be available for purchase at the Izaak Walton bar in the facility.  We want the thank the Miller Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for hosting our meeting the 2nd year in a row!

Trolling License Update We are continued to work on gaining support from fishing groups.  These organizations have given us their support.  Michigan Charter Boat Association, Northwest MI Fishing Club, Detroit Steelheaders, Eastern Michigan Sportsman, Ludington Charter Boat Association, Hammond Bay Area Anglers Association, Arenac County Walleye Club, Bay De Noc Great Lakes Sportfisherman, Battle Creek Steelheaders, Bluewater Sport Fishing Association, Isle Royal Boaters Association and the Hoosier Coho Club.  Most of their members buy MI licenses and fish in MI. We have this out to all the Lake Superior and Lake Erie/St Clair advisory groups and working on support from them.  A number of other groups have told us on the phone they like  it and are reviewing it at winter board meetings.  Our President was on the Mike Avery Show, he is a big supporter of this.  You can hear that at the 14:40 mark at this link -

  We are gaining momentum.

The Coalition to Protect Michigan Resources has filed their appear to the new Tribal consent decree.  One of our Michigan Congressman is looking into this.  More info here at this link:     protectmiresources.com/congressman-wants...d5HH9bp5klCHV-_yAC4g

Spring trolling season is not that far off, we might see some boats hitting the water in February or March if our mild winter continues.
