its easy to understand the importance of a bilge pump

but how many of us take care of it regularly ?

every one knows you have to change the oil in your engine IN HOPE?

bilge pump service might be more important or it certainly is when you have to get water out of your boat fast like you are close to sinking !
annually they should be inspected removed, screen cleaned motor shafts inspected for fishing line and bilge areas vacuumed cleaned of debris that could possible clog the screen if your bilge pump is more than ten years old replace it even if its still good
over 90% of small craft that sink the indecent is at least in part of a bad or clogged bilge pump


every one has a life preserver on their boat
let me suggest one other handy safety item not required
but sooner or later will come in handy
find your self a bilge pump it dont have to be a new one 1000 gph or more put 15' of bilge hose on it 15' of wire on it with some battery clamps like used on portable trolling motors or battery chargers
put neatly rolled up in one of those insulated cooler bag or some thing that floats and is easily tossed
some day you will find your self with water in your boat you need to get out and rather than fixing the problem be able to drop this pump in the bilge hose over the side clam it to a battery and start the recovery process
OR some day come up on a boat in distress they are taking on water pumps and not working or not keeping up toss them the bag in in less than 30 seconds they are pumping out on their way to recovery VS sinking
