Been looking at a really nice looking old Tyee 1950. Does anyone have any input on this model? I have read that transom wood rot is an issue. Has anyone replaced a transom in one of these? Would Seacast be a good option if needed? Is this a do it yourself project or do I need a professional? Trying to make an informed decision. It has a Mercury Optimax 150 now but I will probably replace it with a newer engine. Otherwise it looks great for its age .

I have a 1996 Lund1850 Tyee Grand Sport. I have a two stroke Merc 150 on it ( I would guess it’s the original motor as I bought it used). It’s a great setup, and I wouldn’t change anything I didn’t have to. When I bought it last year I added a pro kicker and went fishing. Mine was barn kept, and I have no transom issues so I can’t comment there. Great boat for what I use it for!

I've owned a 99 Lund1850 Tyee Grand Sport for about 2 years now. I repaired the transom. Apparrently they used a copper based marine treatment on the transom wood. This causes a corrosion issue with the aluminum pitting. There is a Facebook group on Lund Transom Replacement. I really like the boat and didn't mind doing the transom job, I had the tools and space to do it. The only thing I would change is 4 Stroke!

thanks for the replies - did you replace your transom with wood or composite material? I've been doing some research and they switched from marine plywood to the ACQ treated wood in the 1998 model year boats. Since this one is a 1997 it shouldn't have the corrosive treated stuff. I am not sure about the Optimax motor but it will likely get upgraded sometime if I do purchase. A little more expensive than the book value but it looks really good. I know it hasn't been in the water for over a year now and that is not always a good thing

I had two older Lunds , a 18ft Tyee and a 20.5 ft Baron.  I had both of the transoms replaced. The Tyee with wood, the Baron with Seacast. I wouldn't attempt either by myself, it's about a 40 hr job and I don't have the tools expertise or time.  The person who did the Seacast didn’t do a great job. Seeing as that it has to be poured in he had to form a lower bottom as my lunds did not have asealed pocket. He did this right under the rear plate which is only 2 inches lower than the bottom bolts. Not acceptable as the Transom flexed amd started tearing my corners. Luckily I then took it into Frank at Calumet marine and we figured out a suitable reinforcement.
Instead of Seacast, if i had to do it all over again I'd use Coosa board.
