I tried using shrimp and it works ok but not as good as shiners.
I caught a couple small gobies and since I was getting low on shiners, decided to try goby cut bait?
Cut about 2 inches of the tail section off and split that piece in half lengthwise. You need a sharp knife or scissors as the goby is pretty tough. I had good luck using these pieces and they stay on the hook well. Perch hit them even when they were looking torn up and bedraggled.

Yup - sometimes the perch will take anything. In the spring I will use crappie tubes alot and do quite well.

Minnows in the spring and minnows in the fall but pretty much always have marinated shrimp onboard. No need to buy minnows if I don't have to ....

What type of rig does one use to troll for perch? Are you trolling the spinners you're talking about? Being new to fishing the big lake, am I better off trying to locate fish on the finder then cast to them or does trolling make more sense? I've only fished Lake Michigan specifically for perch one time on a charter a few years ago. It seems like we set up over schools of fish then dropped shrimp down to them on a sort of drop shot rig with a weight below two hooks. Is this the standard method?

I apologize for all the questions. I live a couple of hours away from the lake, and I'm hoping to learn the ropes to make for efficient use of limited time. Thank you for any advice you see fit to send along.

Chad

Trolling can be very effective and catch some very nice sized fished, and yes the perch spinners is that people troll with quarter or three eights ounce weights but I believe that works better in shallower water like 17 fow n shallower but I could be wrong some guys might troll deeper I never have
Most people I see fishing in the Indiana side mainly use crappie rigs with Minnows.
I use a home made crappie rig or drop shot style and a 3/4 ounce weight and for the most part if my weights not dragging bottom I'm not catching fish.. Hope this helps!!

Yes, that does help a lot. I'm on my monthly 4-day weekend right now, so I'm hoping I can get up there Monday or Tuesday and go after the perch. After reading some of these threads, I really wished I dodge gone up this morning, but prior engagements rule my day today.

Thank you for the information.
