The charter that we use for perch fishing on Lake Erie operates a 30 ft Sportcraft with a diesel engine. When we anchor for perch the captain will leave the engine run about 80% of the time to attract the perch. When the bite is good he will turn engine off. He is not the only charter who does this. I plan on trying this next time out.

I've heard this a few times that Perch are attracted to noise.
All you can do is try.

Have never heard a good explanation for this, but the reason we started fishing -and catching - perch just east of the MC harbor on Monday was because some buddies caught a 30-perch limit while bobbing around watching the Grand Prix power boat races on Sunday.
Yeah, some 60 rocket boats with 2,000-plus horsepower engines roaring mere yards away and the perch were biting. And they're still hanging around the race course area.

I've heard this as well. I've also seen recommendations for using a heavy noisemaker to clank on the bottom occasionally. I do know that leaving perch on a line to thrash a bit will amplify the bite.

If I cant get the bite going I always used to fire up the outboard. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not but used the tactic quite often. I think their curiosity draws them toward the noise.
