Took a really nice mixed cooler of fish today 10 degrees out of Portage 90 - 100 feet of water. ALL fish came on flashers and flies though I offered them a good assortment of spoons to bite. Caught 'em from 10 color to the bottom. You tell me how deep the 10C was running with a flasher/fly on it.

Depending on Speed, 35-40 would be my guess.

With regular leadcore, I think those guesses would be about right. This particular 'core is the Sufix 832 which is advertised to go 30% deeper. Haven't drug bottom with it so I can't say if their "hype" is spot-on, but it's produced very well for me for the past several weeks.

(The difference is the inner core is wrapped with poly-braided line instead of nylon as in the traditional, making it slicker and thinner allowing it to troll deeper.)

I have some similar improved core that I put on a reel early this spring to try and cant say that I saw much difference. Looking at just the numbers, at 10 color if you say 50 is the deepest normal core will go that would get you 65 at the most at 30% so I would guess around 50ft by the numbers.

Mike what type knot did you use to tie your suffix in? The thing I did notice was with a 20# mono backing and leader I could not use a willis as the reduced size would not allow for the line to fit inside the sheath. I ended up using a double uni but I was not really happy with it. No failure yet but I really havent been fishing on the big lake much so I can't really say I have field tested it enough yet.

I used 832 for 4 years straight and always used a double uni to braid backing / fluoro leader. Never had one fail.

Thanks, good to know. I will fish a little easier when using that setup now knowing it is a proven knot for that setup.

I, too, found it impossible to use the Willis knot so I used the double uni to attach both leadier and to attach the leadcore to the backing. When tying a uni knot using braid, I've found many brands that are quite slick and the usual 5 wraps inside the loop is insufficient. I put 8 or 10 wraps of the braid (and in this case the braided line around the leadcore around the line being tied. No problems so far and I'm running the set usually straight off the stern so there's no in-line to drag back or release from the big board tether - both of which tends to absorb much of the strike force. I do have it sitting in the middle holder with a fairly light drag.

Thanks Mike, guess I am sticking with the Double Uni for now.
