Today, at noon, the Indiana DNR stocked over 60,000 Brown Trout smolt in the East Chicago Marina harbor. We asked the driver why they were stocking midday as opposed to at night as we were concerned about the birds feeding on the stock release. The DNR man continued to release all of the smolt. As he left, he asked us where all of the birds were seeing as they hadn't found the smolt yet. Funny guy, right? I certainly didn't think so. It was a dump and run. Shortly after the release, the truck was long gone and the smolt rose by the thousands, in huge balls, immediately under the surfsce. Shortly thereafter, the seagulls arrived to have a field day feeding on the smolt. Bad day for the smolt, bad day for fishermen, bad day for the stocking program, and a great day for the gulls. Realizing that the damage had already been done, I attempted to call the DNR office in Michigan Citu, only to get the anticipated recorded out of the office message. This was all wrong and somebody needs to address this situation.

Wow! I do vote for allowing boats to have shotguns on board to blast the white crows between bites. That would be fun.

Also, why the high power dump? Wouldn't dropping the hose another couple feet so the fish shot out underwater eliminate a lot of belly flops?

On Indiana's behalf (I hope) I do think this was an IL truck. I believe they supply the browns. Right Ben?

I've seen the same thing happen years ago when Indiana used to stock kings by the Hole in the Wall at inland. Out come the fish, here comes the gulls. I asked then and was told the birds were just "incidental" mortality. Crap, that state record chinook I was destined to catch got eaten by a gull when it was 4 inches long.......

It was our Indiana DNR truck and employee. He picked the smolt up in Illinois and released them in East Chicago.
