Got out for a little this morning and tried out the depth raider I finished installing for the first time. They show some interesting stuff...spent a lot of time watching it.

Seems like a pocket of cold water about 70 down 85 fow to 100 then it was warmer at the same depth past 110.

Went 2 for 3 in that range with 1 15lb laker on a spin doctor green nbk and green fly out 175 on wire diver.

1 for 2 on 150 copper same orange 4 size j plug thats been doing well. 10 lb steel. And lost another right off the bat this morning.

There were times when we were running in the low 2's on the probe but 3.7 on GPS...

I might put a FishHawk on next year but cant seem to commit to doing so yet. I often wonder how accurate those probes are for speed, especially in some cross currents. I can honestly say I have never fished as fast as 3.7 SOG........but perhaps that info is the missing link

what was the better direction for catching with or against the current? I would think with the current because the predators would be facing into the current waiting for food to come to them like in a river.

Seemed like across the current was better. East and west as current was going north and south.

Jeff I've never fished thst fast either on sog...that was taken as the gps was jumping from high 2's to 3's. Most the hits came 2.7 ish sog and 2.0 to 2.2 at the probe.

Speaking with other guys that have one they say they love it as it helps them keep the same constant speed any direction and most of the time their best speed at the probe they said was between 2.2 and 2.3 mph.

They also said they use 12 lb rigger balls for the probe rigger as the blowback was pretty extreme with a 10lber...more than it was compared to the rigger with wire right nex5 to it. 12lb weight is on my shopping list.

I use a 12 pound with the probe. Mine always registers slower than the GPS. Don't know if there's a way to calibrate it. Generally, for salmon/steel I run the GPS 2.5 to 3 and the depthraider at 2.2 to 2.5. Lakers, I want the probe at 1.6 to 1.9 and the GPS less than 2.2. Gets weird when you have to go 3.1 GPS to keep the probe at laker speeds but that's why you have the machines.

BN do you find you get more hits going with or against currents?

Thanks guys, 12lber is what we will have to get for the probe to get more precise feedback, the blowback was pretty severe with a 10lber and required about 14-18 extra feet of rigger wire to reach the thermocline than others were reporting.

Tmik34: Another thing to consider is your downriggers won't meter the plain wire and the Depth Raider cable equally. Stop the boat and zero your probe DR and another and drop them all the way to the bottom. Probably need to be in 50 - 60 feet to see much difference, but there will be a difference and that will drive you nuts, as well. I use the wire sold by Torpedo Divers instead of the plastic coated stuff. It's still thicker than the normal DR wire.

RichM: Tough currents make for tough fishing. Probably catch more going into a current than with a current.
