The Buffalo Bill was the first fishing trip for "Canned Salmon" since the replacement of the transom and floor, it ran beautifully. With my crew of Jeff (dirty), Steve (plane2sea) and Bob it was decided that we head to New Buffalo to make dealing with the east wind easier in a boat that had to be proven. Ended up with 12 coho in the cooler.
Nothing specific did well, coho killer super slim was probably the only spoon that produced more than one fish and a perch patterned crank was the only body bait that did the same. Flasher/flys were never touched. Spoons on 2-3 color cores and cranks on flatlines, riggers never got bit but sliders did. Fished anywhere from 35 to 18 fow with it being more productive inside than out.
Took a big hit on the slider from a king that managed to say hello then give us a heck of a fire drill, unfortunately after being well played it managed to get into the dipsy and won the fight. Ended up placing 6th out of 16 boats.

Day 1 of the pro/am. With stiff south winds it was no question in my mind to shoot over to my home waters of portage and the port of Indiana. Started just east of the doughnut and headed west. Water was really clear with a small chalk line out of the port and no visible mud line from the ditch. We were able to box a 5lb king offshore of the 4 with an nbk on a 5 color. It was down hill from there. Heading back east we managed a hit on the dipsy with a flasher/fly combo but the coho was barely hooked and popped off inches from the net. Next to go off was a 50 copper with a Carmel dolphin spoon. A hard rip back a good 15 ft and it was gone before a hand could touch the rod, broke the line. Had maybe another drive by or 2 on the way back east and that was it.
Back to the marina and pulling into the slip my steering goes out. By the grace of God I was able to get the boat backed into the slip without any issues. Found a fitting was leaking and made the nesscesary repair. With Sundays winds being much more than Saturday and most big fish being caught further offshore than I wanted to venture, the decision was made to not fish in Sundays tournament.
Good luck to those out fishing Sunday's tournament and those fishing next week's classic!

understandable.  The first few tournaments for anyone is often humbling.  But once you get through the first one or two, see all that you learn, and see many great people and begin to make relationships - its impossible not to fish them.  In my opinion anyway.  We are all different though.  Good luck and I look forward to seeing you out there someday.
