Always interesting to have your shakedown trip also be a tournament day as I look out at the lake from the mouth of the ditch at 5:29AM with no clue where to go.  This shortly followed by me standing at the back the boat looking at 12 rods, 400 spoons, 20 flashers, and 12 dodgers thinking to myself "Now how do you do this again?".  Ah well, with a best bud, my son, and we were fishing so a smile and dive into the fishing habits of the last 25 years (not all of them good) and give it whirl.

Dropped lines at 45/12 in 75' of water and starting marking fish. What was supposed to be 1'-2' turned into 2-3' with occasional 4' pushing at us so just put out a 6 rod spread.  Corner rigger down 60' with a Moonshine San Crab (love that lure) went off and fat laker was in the boat.  Next the 275' steel on the board goes and the next laker is the boat- these fish are eating well from looks of their bellies.  OK, no problem, we need 3 lakers for the tournament anyway and its 7:30 we are good.  250' steel goes and we have our 3rd laker, time to focus on silver!  By 11:00 the lake settled and we could go with 9 rods and looking for that roving pod of coho as we trolled with the waves back towards Portage since we were not finding any north of the gong between 55' - 80'.  By 2:00 we had boated 10 lakers, shook of another 3, and not a single silver to finish off the box.  Marked very little bait the entire day and by the closer we got to 3 corners area and around it we were not marking as many fish either.  Cooler at the fish cleaning station, a few cold beers, and while we could of done better in terms of tournament results, a great time with the best crew and we are looking forward to HCC Summer Series #2!
