Hey guys,

I came across a bunch of yellow birds in my storage this year that I just never really use. I am going to give them a chance this year with the early coho and set them to slide down the line. My question is what type of stopper do you use to prevent them from sliding to the fish and how long should to lead from the stopped be?

I usually run a small 1/4-3/4 oz keel weight then about 4-5 feet to the dodger or crank, sometimes longer depending what's on hand. I keep a pool noodle with "leaders" set up for my dipsies and planer rigs, I just use them interchangeably. Typically I have some that are longer with lighter line and smaller snaps that I'll use for spoons and cranks and some that are shorter and heavier with bigger snaps swivels for Dodgers and my other attractors.

I run keel weights sometimes and sometimes run them clean. A speed bead 4-5 feet in front of the lure works great. Not needed if weight is run.

I use beads made by Dreamweaver about 20 inches above crankbaits. They have no weight to them and are great early in spring when running thinfins and stick baits in the top of water column. Mike

I use a split shot that is big enough to stop the bird from sliding down into the lure. Usually about 18 inches in front of the lure is good. Probably not ideal but works and is quick to remove if need be.
