Ive always used the standard 27lb dracon leadcore. Have been seeing the 832 suffix advsnced leadcore for some time now but never used it. Just picked up a couple leadcore reels and looking to try this stuff out.

Biggest size I see is 18lb test. Says 70% stronger, is 18lb enough? What type of knot to use to tie it to the main line? Does it really acheive 30% greater depth you think?

I have one pole with lead on it but never fished lead before and have not had much luck on it so far. I want to say it is the 832 but don' recall 100% - it was on sale at Cabela's last year so I figured what the heck might as well try it. If I can find the box and confirm one way or another I will let you know - but I imagine its in the dump.

I have not used the advanced Sufix leadcore but I use the standard Sufix leadcore and I love it. It is reasonably priced and the colors hold up well. I catch over half of my fish in late spring and early summer on various lengths of leadcore. You really need some in your spreads. You can use spoons, shallow cranks, and I even use small 6 inch dodgers and flies on my lead core rods. Last season when I started using the tuna baits I trolled them on downriggers and my leadcores.
Flat line them behind the boat or off walleye boards you add a stealthy presentation to your spread. Lead puts a lot of movement and change in a lures action and its location.

I agree about a must for leadcore. I use it every trip from early summer and on.im very familiar with the standard leadcore, Im more just asking for some comparisons and if its worth the extra money.

The outer sheath is dynema on the advanced suffix and the standard has a Dacron sheath. Dynema is the base material for modern day bow strings and fishing superlines. They have small diameters for their strengths allowing them to go deeper. I checked Rapala's website and seen that 18# is the heaviest break strength. I am wondering if that stuff is more for walleye fishing. Still I would bet it would work for most salmon and trout until you got ahold of the salmon version of "Jaws". The dynema fibers also will last much longer than Dacron. Bowstrings and superlines last forever it seems. So maybe if the advanced line lasts twice as long it is worth the extra.

I'd probably have switched to the newer "thinner" lead line already but I got a deal on a bulk spool of the regular stuff a few years ago and still have most of that spool. If everyone started using the new stuff and lighting up the lake with it, I'd pitch the old and respool, but I'm too cheap to throw out several hundred yards of brand new. As far as using 18 pound instead of 27, I doubt that will be much of an issue. There aren't many kings anymore or prospects for them coming back. 18 pound ought to hold up nicely. Back in the BC days (before charterfishing) I ran 12 pound in the spring and 17 in the summer and fall. Never had many broken lines.
As far as knots to join lead and leader, with the regular LC, nothing worked better than the Willis knot which was a play on Chinese handcuffs. Probably will work just fine with the dynema sheath. That's what I'd try first. LC to a braided line backing? Hard to beat the uni-knots.

Agreed that the willis knot is usually the knot of choice. But, with the new Advanced leadcore, when you pinch the lead out, the sheath will have a tendency to pull tighter and make it hard to slide the leader line into the sheath of the new leadcore. It is also thinner which also adds to the problem with tying the willis knot. I don't see were the Advanced lead was worth the money they ask for it. Have always used 18lb. test leadcore and never had any issues with break offs.

I use nothing but the 832 and love it. This will be my 3rd season with it. As Ed mentioned, you pinch the lead out to ty your knot. I use a basic double uni knot and it works fantastic. I typically run 50lb braid as backing, however many colors of 832, then a 20lb fluoro leader.
