Well I couldn't hold back any longer I had to get out on the water. With Mondays forecast of calm winds and low waves I decided it that would be the day. If you live near the lake you know that yesterday was far from calm.

Anyway I got out at MC and trolled from the DNR building to the north breakwall I ended up going 5 for 8 all coho. Most came before the outlet from the Washington park marina. Ran red on red D&F combo that was the best with brads thin fins coming in second. Due to proper wintering techniques everything started and ran great however I do have a speaker that I need to replace.... just when you think everything is going great.

I've had far worse "opening" days over the years. Once the outboard wouldn't start (though I'd started it at home.) I was so jacked at it I beat it with the landing net and it started. Then one of the guys got seasick so we pulled in at the Hole in the Wall and climbed out to steady his legs. He said something about beer before 8AM. Don't remember if it caused it or he needed it. So while we were on the wall I took a stroll and found a dead body half in/half out of the water on the inside of the landfill.

Honestly, we figured the guy was as dead as he was going to be, we only needed a few more cohos to limit out so we went back to fishing but Jim soon went back to puking. So we went in and called the cops. First a squad car came. Then his supervisor came. Then the Detectives showed up. By now we had news copters from Chicago circling the marina and you'd think we were movie stars giving so many interviews to reporters.

The best comment was an answer my friend Jim gave when asked if he suspected foul play. This was on camera. Allison Rossotti from WGN was asking the questions. He said, It's cold. The water temperature is 42 degrees, he had about 100 feet of yellow rope wrapped around his torso but I doubt it was a water skiing accident. I lost it. My one chance in forever to buddy up to Allison Rossotti and the fool comes up with that answer.

I'm tearing up just thinking about it. (Circa 1980)
