I know I'm about to open Pandora's Box with this one but here it goes.

Spooling my first set of wire diver rigs. I went with Cold Water reels, I know to put a brain backing, I know to spool and to keep tension on them I understand knots.. Here is where I need experienced advice what size divers are we running? I don't think I will fish much deeper than the wreck or Gong due to I'm limited to a 17' boat should I run a #1 or #0? Is there a huge difference in what a dive depth chart is vs running mono and if so has someone made one up? Then to the main event If you run a Floro leader to the diver off of your wire then your obvious leaders to flasher/dodger or lure do you need a snubber? I was under the impression you do cus of wire not having stretch which I understand but according to BloodRuns website doing the "Double Leader" set up it helps prevent kinks and increases hook ups. Just wondering what thoughts are on this since I have never ran a snubber since I've always primarily ran mono divers in the past.

Then an after thought question... Do you guys use wire inshore? I know it's primary use is supposedly to help you get deeper quicker but I've also read that the acoustic humming noise off of the wire is a possible cause for attracting fish as well?

Wire or braid goes all the way to the diver, then a snubber, then mono or flourish to my bait. I use three sizes of divers, not sure what numbers are but standards, large, and mags. I run wire anytime I’m fishing more than about 20 feet down. In shallow water I just use the smaller divers so I can get some distance from the boat. As far as dive charts go, I think it’s all ballpark. So many variables with diver size, what you have on in terms of spoon or flasher or meat rig, speed, etc. I just figure 2 to 3 times the depth I’m targeting for a starting point. I’ll run one side shorter and one side longer and dual it in as I fish. One tip I can offer is don’t pump the rod too much fighting fish, you want even tension on that wire. After you fight a fish it’s a wise move to let the diver out and real it back in smoothly just to be sure. I’ve lost a couple real nice fish because the wire had loose wraps buried in the spool and when a running fish got down in the spool it bound up.

I only use the medium size and the magnum size (the only difference is the size of the weight underneath). Then with the o rings that snap on, you really have 4 sizes. I think the wire "zinging" as a fish call is wishful thinking. I do use wire divers quite often but prefer 30# braid and unless the fleas are bad and sticking to the braid, I'll try to go with it rather than use the wire. Depth is a SWAG. I know when trying to rub the bottom with mag divers, no rings in 50 feet of water out past the gong and dragging a big dodger and spin n glo it usually takes from 150 to about 190 feet of wire to get it down to the bottom.

Man wire diver fish are my favorite! There is no stretch on the wire so you feel everything. It will dive a lot more vs the mono and even a little more than the briad. I run my wire straight to the dipsey on a 2 or 3 setting and I crimp my wire with 3 crimps. (Probably over kill) Back of dipsey a start with a snubber because not nearly as much stretch in your setup. Then the leader is rod length to the lure. Rod lenght so you can net and not have to hand line. You'll find when kings are aggressive and on the feed there is no better setup than a wire diver with a flasher fly of your choice.

I like using braid for dipsies as it is a more forgiving setup. You can feel the fish fight because of the very low stretch of the braid. Don't have wire kinks either. Everything else is the same for wire vs braid. I would not think mono would be a good choice for a dipsey mainline.

Southshore is right on with what I would say. I see on a 2-2.5 setting on a medium diver with ring it is about a 2 to 1 ratio to about 70ft out then goes to 3 to 1. That is 2 ft out for 1 ft of depth and I have not noticed much difference in Braid to Wire for depth except for on certain days the wire diver definitley out performs braid for action on the King bite. Can't say that for any other species in my many years of experience running wire except back in the before the dipsey days and wire was on a rod with a 1lb ball bouncing off the bottom for lakers. Come on I know a few of you guys remember the days before dipseys, LOL.

so here is my limited experience. I picked up a wire rod used from a member here because the price was right and I thought; why not. So I started dipsy's with mono and my catch rate was horrible and trying to pop the dipsy loose was a real chore. I switched my dipsys to braid and my catch rate improved greatly. Now here is where I introduced my first wire rod. My wire catch rate was at least 3 to 5:1 compared to the braid lines. I now have two wire and two braid dipsys and the wire are always out performing the braid and much easier to reel in also. So I can't say if it is because they run deeper, they have no stretch at all so hooks up better or the magic hum (this is the first I have heard of that).

I really didnt expect the wire to do me much good but it has been the hottest rod since I put it in the water.

And to answer the original question I run the large ones (not maxi) and I have one or two small ones but generally dont put them on the wire.

Ive got to believe that it is due to the hum if anything at all. Braid and wire both have no stretch, and depth differences are negligible with wire having an ever so slight advantage. Either its the hum, or placebo effect for fisherman :) You decide and fish with what you have confidence in.

Being a braid dipsy guy, I just got my first two wire divers over the winter - so yea talking to people I think there could be something to it, only time and data logs will tell.

I would say placebo affect except I really didnt expect to do well with it when I bought it since 1) it was new and had to learn it 2) I didnt see how it would make that much difference over braid. For me it made all the difference and now I have more confidence in it so it will have that advantage moving forward.

Clearly Ed, it was the magic left in that rig when it was passed on to you!!!
