I have run 12's mostly in the past. I now have 14's - might go higher. It really depends on what your doing and in what depth. Heavier is a bit more difficult to work with, but when you need to get down 100+ in the heart of summer, it surely helps a great deal.

I run 10s for depth down to about 80 feet after that blow back is a problem and I jump to 14 pound balls.

12 lb. balls are a good all around size. Be prepared to lay out a lot of cable if you fish the bottom offshore with 10 lb. balls or smaller. There should be some available at the Hoosier Coho Club Tackle sales this Saturday.

I was wondering how far back from the ball do you guys run you setups? Or how much line do you let out before clipping line to the rigger ball?

Early spring fishing for coho 8 to 15 feet behind the ball. Offshore/summer steelhead/ fall kings 100 to 125 feet back. Rotators or dodgers salmon fishing 20 to 60 feet back. Deep water laker fishing 15 to 40 feet back. Pay close attention to what the fish want. Those numbers I am giving you are very good starting points.
