Some interesting reading of the Seiche that hit in 1954 on Lake Michigan. There have been others that hit but were not as major as 1954. Google Lake Michigan seiche of 1954, as there are many different articles about what took place.
In 1980 there was one that hit the Michigan City area. I was working as a 1st mate on a charter boat(JO JAC) out of city. A fast moving summer storm hit and we stayed out on the lake as it hit. The storm came thru so quick that it was a mad house trying to get back in to the harbor at Michigan City. The storm surge pushed so much water up into trail creek and the boat harbor, that as the water receeded it looked like a white water rapid with the water trying to get back out into the lake. The water had risen probably close to a couple of feet into the harbor, and as the storm cleared the water pushed out as fast as it had risen. Many have never heard of a seiche. The memories of the '54' seiche are scary, and a reminder that Lake Michigan has many stories to tell.
