Thanks Ed.

Was up there for an extended weekend over labor day and fished Platte Bay, it is the area and one of the stories I grew up with. Only a year old at the time my Dad told me of his experience with the storm, he was a survivor that day from one of the boats that ended up on the beach. I have had my dealings with the northern lake and protection of the bay to round the point into some nasty unpredicted storms. Once took 2 hours to travel the 5 miles from Pointe Betsie to Frankfort harbor due to the seas that had built while we were coho fishing in the bay. My Great Grandfather was a member of the Life Saving Service(later became the Coast Guard) stationed at Pointe Betsie and took part in several rescues around the Pointe and into the Manitou passage. Many articles and books written about some of the rescues performed and numerous shipwrecks over the hundreds of years in that area.

This article and events of the past, recent years, and today just go to show you that salmon fishing have had several major impacts on the Great Lakes in the past 50+ years and into the near future.

Wow Jeff,

Sorry if that one hit close to home for you. Thanks for the personal touch you added, to such a bad situation.

Hey Ed,

I was talking with my mom about it and asked her if she had went to any of the discussions. She was telling a little bit more of the story that I had never heard from my dad. One thing was there were 4 guys in the boat he was in. They made it from the bay back around the Point which is about 6 miles and when they had to beach the boat, one of the guys had all 4 life jackets on, talk about looking out for your buddies. Another thing was they were living down state at the time about 4-5 hrs away. She didnt hear or know anything about it until he had gotten back from my Grandparents house a day later, that sure wounldn't be likely today with all the information now outlets we have. Like the article mentioned and she confirmed all she knew was he had to go to get in on the first return of the coho, they all had the frenzied fever, and none of them knew much, if anything, about fishing the big lake but they were going to go and there was no stopping them.
