As I was fishing the other day one rod was producing better then the other with the same lure on each. The only difference was the action of the rods. The most productive was the stiffer one which was also slightly longer. What difference would this make? First of all it would impart more action on the lure with the boat and wave movement on the planner board. It would create more lure speed or less in a turn depending on the direction of the turn. There are so many variables to consider yet we (me included) tend to think it is the hot lure. While I think lure color can be important the first thing is to find the fish Second, figure out depth and speed control. Always keep an open mind. The variables is what makes it interesting.

What I am about to say typicaly does not relate to spring coho. But in the same respect I don’t know what you were running within your spread. But I have found offshore that I will have steady action on all rods except for one or two rods. I’ve changed those baits and found all rods went dead. Sometimes one bait can be drawing fish into your spread but they are biting other baits. But there are like you said so many variables. All we can to is be very observant and pay close attention to detail to fine tune your spread so that you can put a few extra fish in the box that maybe you would not have otherwise. I could see how different stiffness rods could make a difference with bait action with only a small amount of line out near shore. Maybe not so much with long coppers and lead but who knows for sure you could be on to something.
It's better to ask forgiveness than for permission.

No snowflake is alike, all peas in a pod are not identical and neither are all fishing lures. I've had specific lures that were just better and others that were absolute duds - even though they were from the same manufacturer and painted alike. I assume there's not just one mold that makes every J-Plug, for instance. Maybe 50? Maybe one machine that cranks out 50 at a time? Each batch of plastic is not identical -dang close. It probably makes a difference if the lure is the from the first batch (cold machine) or at quitting time.

That's why I have some old, scratched, rehooked, dirty chipped and faded lures that out produce the new ones day in and day out. That's why some of the new ones will produce on occasion, but are seldom a stand-out. Sometimes it's the little things, sometimes it's the lure.
