Jeff: I saw in a different post you had issues with P-Line Fluoro. I'm surprised! I have not used it, but P-Line is usually pretty good stuff and modern fluorocarbon is much better than it was a few years ago. What pound test were you using, what knots did you tie and just what was the issue that had you breaking off?

Hey Mike,
I have used P-line in various capacities before with no issues. In this specific case, I moved everything over to P-line Flouroclear 20 lb over the winter. This is a copolymer line. My hopes were to maybe get a few more fish with the smaller diameter and fluoro outer layer. I knew it would not be as tough as big game and the bloodrun leaders I was using, but heck I could get a giant spool and solve all my line needs being riggers, leaders etc...........or not.

All the signs were there. I broke a few new knots off after tying during the pull test.....made me think...uh wtf, must have made a bad knot. Then during coho season a few broke in the boat after slinging fish in without a net. Then in the last week, I have been broke off a grand total of 6 times losing both large and average size kings.

In the past 5 years, I have been broke off once - and now its the plague. Either the line cant take the shock or the tiniest nick during the initial strike or otherwise causes the line to fail in a hurry. We always check our lines meticulously for nicks prior to sending them out so its not a neglect issue.

We had rigger lines fail, slider lines fail, copper leaders fail. We had a slider line fail before we could even get to the rod............wow how does that happen....

I will also note that these were all clean breaks - they most definitely were not failures at the knot as there was no curled line at the end etc.

Shocker to me. I have used a lot of floroclear p-line in 10 lb test and landed several lakers, and a lot of coho a king and a whole lot of bass and have yet to have a break off. Seriously think you somehow got a bad batch of line. I tried some Seagaur florocarbon a couple of years ago and had the same problem you are having now. I think you can get a bad batch of line from any of the suppliers sometimes.

Certainly a possible explanation.

I have used and haven’t had a problem with the 30 lb test version of this line. Used only on my 300 - 400 coppers in the 40-50’ length range. I picked up some Vicious 20 lb fluoro a couple of weeks ago and so far it seems strong as hell. I boated an 18.5 King with that line and horsed that fish to the boat. Also had a spoon attached to a wire diver hook the reef north of New Buffalo. It was very hard to “thumb” the wire reel to snap the line. I had to crank the drag and double thumb the spool to get the rig loose. I was prepared to loose my lure and even possibly my diver. I was happy and surprised when i reeled in a diver, leader, spoon even though there was a straightened hook. Seems like tough stuff!
