When I'm pulling lines at the end of the trip, I always leave the longest line in the water until the very end. I tell the people on the boat,
"We are still fishing as long as there's a lure in the water." Then once all the riggers are up, lures stowed, everything ready for the ride back to the harbor, I hand the rod to someone and tell them, okay, reel this one in, give it your special twitches, hold your mouth right and when that lure's in, the fishing is done for the day."
One year fish were caught like this, four trips in a row. The trick hasn't worked this year, until yesterday. The line was an 8 color, pulling a UV/orange ladder spoon. When there was about one color left to reel in, the rod doubled down with a chunky coho. I guess that little gal knew how to hold her mouth!
