I had a marine radio fail a number of years ago and had to get one off the shelf quick. It was a cobra (not my first choice but needed one quick). It worked well, not the best speaker quality but it did its job up until I sold my old boat. It may have been the same or similar to the one your looking at but I cant say for sure.

A big step up in quality for a small increase in price is a Standard Horizon if you are looking to buy or comparing. Hard to beat and they make gps models which make them an extra navigational aid and adds an extra layer of safety for your boat. I looked at Cobras and chose Standard Horizon.
My Searunner 190, "Four "D's" and a "C". Retirement money well spent.

To be honest I don’t really ever go offshore almost always a mile or two from launch, but I’ve pushed it off for a while so I figured I’d start somewhere....

Having a marine radio is a must IMO on this lake. Some poeple will say, I only fish shallow in the spring - maybe targeting coho by Gary Light. All it takes is a perfect storm of strong south winds and your motor dying and you are in trouble fast. Get a radio if you dont have one guys!

I use that particular radio and have had no problems with it. I have installed an external speaker - (there's a plug in spot on the rear of the radio. the speaker is an ancient Radio Shack speaker from a car stereo system.

Where do you guys recommend the antenna going? I thought I Read something about it had to be 10 feet from the actual radio? Also not to touch it??? I was thinking about the bow to keep away from back of boat..

Thanks to all the responses

On other boats I owned I had the antenna on the bow and it worked fine, except when folding it down (and making the boat look like a unicorn). On this boat, I mounted it on the gunwale so it would fold down and it's mounted perhaps 30 inches from the radio. Touching the antenna? There's no shock or anything I know of. Might interfere with transmitting or receiving but how often do you need to be touching the antenna? There are "shorty" antennas out there, but remember, the VHF signal is line of sight so you will get significantly more range from an 8 footer than a 3 or 4 foot model.
