I was doing some really deep diver trolling yesterday. As you can see on the line counter, I had it set at just under 9000 feet. That ought to get me down to the depths where the fish living there have never seen a lure! What?

Actually, I have a an Abu Garcia Altum DLC - digital line counter -reel I'm evaluating for GLA magazine. I was doing some photo work on it yesterday and a combo of my camera lens, the sun, the LCD screen all combined to reveal the liquid crystals. Luckily, in all the other photos the display appeared normal. BTW - great reel! Even has a light feature so you don't have to hold a flashlight in your teeth when you are fishing in dim or dark conditions.

I have been afraid to try digital line counters, I would throw it overboard if I got out there and the battery died or is started doing crazy counting. If you get to fish with that reel for a while Mike let me know how it works out for you.

The August issue of GLA will have a feature I wrote called "Reels You Can Count On" about using line-counter reels and this reel is one of several which will be mentioned in the article. It will also be one of the items I review in the Tackle and Toys column.
