Just got a notice the US Steel Plant at Portage that issued what looked to be a box car load of iron stuff - rust? ore? slime? (I know it wasn't just "iron" since iron just sinks) - has done it again. They have now had an oil spill. What kind of oil? Didn't say. It's not like USS refines crude, but some kind of oil went down the wrong drain somehow and ended up in the water causing beach closings and drinking water concerns along the lakefront. The usual USS assurances that this latest SNAFU was just a minor glitch and they have the situation well in hand have been issued. The usual teams from IDEM and EPA are on hand to assess and monitor the situations. No doubt local, state and federal politicians are monitoring the situation following the usual mantra - never let a crisis go to waste.
