Donna and I are getting ready to head over to Bodine fish hatchery. Today should be the end of spawning the Skamaina for 2026!

A few pictures of the Skamania spawning for 2026. Indiana has for decades handled the spawing for the Skamania Steelhead.
Bodine is out in Mishawaka right off the St. Joe river. The month of January is the spawning time for these great fish. As mentioned in a previous post,Indiana DNR fisheries folks take from trail creek 700 skamania yearly. 450females to 250 males. They once a week will do a number of these fish and the operation is something to see. There is alot of work as these fish are wintered at Bodine were they do not feed all winter. The work starts outside as the adult fish are netted from the outside pond. Consider the temps lately as our DNR do this work. The fish are then put into tanks on the back of the DNR pick up trucks and backed into the building. Inside is were the rest of the work happens. Each person has their own task to preform stripping eggs and passing them on to getting a sperm treatment before moving to the next stage. Every year this work is performed so many other states can have and experience these great fish.
