Genetically-altered Salmon (from the 11-20-15 News-Dispatch)
Seems like another instance of corporate greed and politics moving us closer to the
end as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved human consumption of DNAaltered
salmon on Thursday. A food corporation successfully mixed genes of Chinook
salmon, eelpout and farm-raised Atlantic salmon to produce a faster-growing
"FrankenFish." The new species of salmon is expected to be available to consumers in
two years.
On the other hand, maybe biologists can use some of the science to improve Lake
Michigan's hatchery stock. A thorough article on the twisted-fish tale is

In case you missed it, Mike McKee wrote a
great article to sum up this past season’s
fishing on Lake Michigan. It appeared in
the December 30, 2015 issue of the News
Dispatch. Check it out if you didn't see it
the first time around. Mike did a great job
and really pointed out the ups and downs
of 2015. As Mike said “ a down year in
many ways buoyed by some wonderfully
huge trout”

March Club Meeting
Mark your calendars now and make plans to attend the March 9, 2016 club
meeting. Captain Dan Keating of Blue Horizon Charters will be the guest
speaker. Dan is considered to be one of the most successful charter captains
on Lake Michigan. Dan, along with Lake Michigan Angler Magazine editor
Dave Mull, are the presenters of the annual Salmon School seminar series offered
in January through March each year.
When it comes to fishing for King Salmon, there is no one that has had more
experience or success than Dan on Lake Michigan. His presentations include
invaluable information on finding and catching Kings, Coho. Steelhead,
Browns, and Lake Trout. If you have ever wanted to hear Dan speak or attend
his seminars, this meeting is a great opportunity to learn from the best.
Dan will have his books and DVDs available for purchase before and after his
presentation!

Hello, my name is Craig Koepke, I am your president for 2016. I hope you
and your family had a happy holiday season. With the 2016 season just
around the corner, it is time to start thinking about getting ready for fishing
and the Hoosier Coho Club meetings and activities. The Club needs your
help—please get involved. Whether it is helping with our booth at a sport
show or with the Classic, the Club needs your help.

HOOSIER COHO CLUB
MISSION STATEMENT
It is the mission of the Hoosier Coho
Club to promote, preserve, and encourage
wise management of anadromous
fish (fish ascending streams and rivers
to spawn) wherever they may be.
Further goals of the Club are to encourage
strict observance of sport fishing
laws and practices while denouncing all
persons known to be in violation of
these laws and practices.
The membership encourages research
and development programs related to
our sport. The Club also serves as a
source of collecting and dispersing information
regarding tackle, fishing techniques,
laws, legislations, pollution
problems, disease, meetings research,
and all other pertinent information relating
to anadromous fish.

POWDER PUFF TOURNAMENT
POWDER PUFF
The Powder Puff Tournament started when Terry Klutz was President of the Hoosier Coho Club. He was from Michigan
where some of the ports had a Women's Fishing Tournament before their Big Fishing Tournaments and brought it up at a
meeting. Marilyn Nicholson and Lisa Dabkowski were interested, so Terry Klutz put them in charge of it and in 2010 and
2011 Deb Loetz. In 2012 there wasn't a Powder Puff so in 2013 Laurie Weisemann took over and is in charge presently.
Judy Hobart helped every year since the beginning until she passed away in 2013. The Powder Puff only allows Females
to catch fish. It's a non-profit tournament where 100% of entry fees are paid back to the participants. Donations are also
collected to help everyone who didn't place in fishing walk away with a prize. A lunch is provided after the tournament. It's
the same now, but the Hoosier Coho Club adds money so we can pay down to 10th place. The first tournament only had
three boats and they were Marilyn Nicholson, Carl Hartman and Glenn Moldenhaur boats. The best guess is it started in
2003. The first year that we actually have official records is 2005 where 59 women participated. To win that year, you had
to catch the biggest fish in each category: Chinook, Coho, Steelhead and Brown Trout. Then in 2007 the top 4 biggest fish
in each category placed and Lake Trout was allowed. In 2007 through 2010 only the top 3 fish in each category were paid.
Then in 2011 to present the top 10 fish in any species wins. Each year brings anywhere from 30 to 60 female participants
who come from the ports of Illinois to Michigan.
