I'm heading to Erie next week - HQ on South Bass Island. Anyone been over that way recently with any fishing reports or does anyone have a good website to get current fishing reports?

I'm not staying at Saunders but I have stayed there in the past. I tell you what, I'll fish north and west of the islands and leave all the fish south and east for you.

I have fished Erie the last 6 years on a 3 day charter first week of June. The charter comes out of Catawaba; some days the fish are within a mile of shoreline, if not we almost always end up east of North Bass about 2 to 3 miles. The Charters are easy to spot.

I have been taking my boat to Saunders Resort for a week since 1990. Most of the trips are in July and we normally fish Canadian waters. The last 2 years we stayed in Ohio waters and took limits each day that we fished around the islands. We always launched the boat at South Bass Park unless the winds are above 15 mph and then launched at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, they have good parking.
Last year because of high water levels (2nd week in July) we were not able to launch at South Bass State Park (on west side of the island) due to boulders on the launch ramp. The waves wash the boulders from the "South Bass State Park Rocky Beach" around the dock into the launch ramp. Several boats tried and damaged their out drives. The
Put-in-Bay Yacht Club had several feet of water on the road and dock was submerged. We ended up launching down town and driving the truck and boat back to the South Bass State Launch Ramp to park the boat and trailer and took a cab back to down town. Be careful if you use this launch facility as the concrete ramp has about a 3 foot drop on either side; it would be easy to drop a trailer wheel over the side. Once launched drove the boat to the public dock to pick up the 2 buddies as water to floating dock is about 4 to 5 feet deep.

Thanks. I know the State Park ramps were in bad shape last summer. Was that the ramp you said had the drop offs along the side? The only problem I had (other than parking) downtown was water on the courtesy pier. I didn't even know there was a ramp at the Yacht Club! Is it open to the public or with a fee?

The drop off that I mentioned is on the both sides of the concrete launch ramp downtown, it is a nice concrete ramp but make sure you keep trailer on the ramp. You can see both drop offs from the boat as the trailer is backing up if the water is somewhat clear. This is the ramp west of where the Jet Express comes in and north of the public restrooms in the park downtown. Because of the water I was in the boat when launching the boat. Drove the boat to the public dock to the west and picked up the crew. Th docks were under water about a foot with a north wind we wore shorts and took off shoes to walk the dock to the boat

Over the years the we launched at the yacht ramp (when high west winds) and parked truck and trailer in the grass field to the east of the yacht club building, just south of the ramp. Cost was $5. The office personnel usually don't show up until 10 to noon. Recommend that you contact them when you arrive as the office personnel will likely be there. They may have a weekly rate. They will not allow launching when they have young kids are there for sail boat races. One year I rented a dock for a week from the Yacht Club and another year rented a dock from Crews Nest. I believe Board Walk will also rent dock space as will the public docks downtown. I stopped renting dock space prefer launching every day at State Park.
Good Luck Bruce
