All in all my friends and I had a fun and “somewhat” productive trip to Racine. First time out of any port is always a tough bite and this was no different. That and morning waves made for tough fishing in the prime time and then flat conditions made for tough midday fishing. We caught lakers, coho, steel and kings. Plenty of fish to eat and a pretty good haul coming home.
The thermocline was 55 to 65 feet deep. We fished from 150 to 300 feet. (300 isn’t all that far - maybe 12 miles). Most of our effort was around 200 feet and that’s 8 or 9 miles. Caught fish in all depths and from 50 to 135 feet deep with the lures.

Most fish came on flashers and flies. A few on spoons, one or two on dodgers. Only one on meat. We did catch a couple on Yakama’s new SpinFish which is sort of like a Brad’s Cut Bait, but easier to use. I packed it with sardines. Downriggers, divers and long lines - mostly coppers were all about same.

Anyway, it was an interesting trip. Great launch site right by the lake. We didn’t eat out so we can’t do any recommendations on that. It’s only about a half hour farther than Northpoint. I’d highly recommend it as a destination if you are looking for a change of pace. The DNR does stock the Root River there with coho, kings and steel so the summer/fall fishery should hold up.

Though not the largest fish of the trip, this 12 pound coho was the most impressive!
