So having the same farm to hunt for over 4 decades, we get to see some really cool bucks. But occasionally we see bucks that we would like to get out of the gene pool. Burn a buck tag when we have to.
So my son who usually out does me did it again. He took out Mr. Ugly. This deer was trying to service a few does, as you can see he is not the usual deer we take. But it gets better! When we have taken bucks over the  years that have shown old wounds. We figured this to be the case with this one. But, we were wrong. No visible old wounds, no broken bones to be see. This poor fella must of at one time been hit by a car possibly. As he was skinned out, it just got uglier and uglier. One whole side had massive old blood clotting. Old black clotting and the hide was blackened from the trauma. Even the good side shown old blood clots with in the backstraps, and hind leg down to the ankle.

Was it any good to eat? Bet it was like chewing fur and hair covered rubber truck tires. Good one to cull from the local population.

Hey Don hope all is well. No he lost the whole deer. Surprised to see how much old clotting was still in the grain of the meat on the good side. First one I have ever seen that looked so nasty. Agreed a good one to take out of the herd.

Happy Turkey Day Don!!!!!

Thank you Ed, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. In fact, Happy Thanksgiving to all the Southenders . No bucks yet for me this season yet. I passed on my best during Halloween pre-rut. It doesn’t get any better or easier the later it gets in the year down here either. Been a slow deer season. All I have to my credit is a doe that dressed 135 pounds.

Now giving more thought behind this poor guy I wish we had him tested for EHD. A good friend suggested looking more into it. I have and came across pictures that looked similar to what we observed. With all the trauma that was involved with no broken bones makes me wonder now. EHD doesn't always kill deer off. Some do suffer for months with the disease. Some survive.

Well Ed I don't think your deer was hit by anything. I'm really not sure what is going on but. I had 2 deer this season that were as yours. The difference was this was a doe & fawn. Very dark almost black. With a very odd smell to it. But it was through out the entire body. These 2 were from Fulton county. Now another buddy that hunts Porter county had 1 the same way.
Now I've been hunting the Fulton county farm for just over 30 years and have never seen anything like this before. My buddy that hunts Porter county told me his area was hit hard with EHD in the early season. Were as I have seen no sign around the Fulton county farm. Just wondering if the 2 are connected? Just sharing some thoughts.

Wildkat, I appreciate your post. Seeing that you have had decades hunting in your area, lets me see that you guys also saw something out of the ordinary. Makes me wonder how many others saw something that took them back alittle

I did see pictures of other hunters in Pulaski Co. that had found dead deer along the Tippy. They assumed EHD. From where we are in Starke, I could throw stones from where we are and hit 3 other counties. We might be somewhat close.

I think you are correct we are fairly close. We are located in NW Fulton county about a mile south of the Tippy. We do have a couple farms north of the river also. I've had days when we had 3 generations in the woods at the same time. What a great feeling that is.
I'm concerned with the findings of these deer with the very odd looking & smelling meat. Two of the 3 I mentioned came from a buddies back 20 and he watches them every day. Looking to be in good shape all year long with NO strange actions. I guess I was hoping that one of the DNR folks might have seen this and chimed in. The heard looks healthy with more bucks than does being seen. Here's a picture of my buck taken on opening day.
So I'm hoping we have a normal off season and don't see anymore of these deer with the strange looking meat.
