I haven’t done any Lake Michigan perch fishing in many years and I’m looking to get back into it. So I’m looking for for info on when, where and how. I’m not looking for anyone’s honey holes or special techniques but just the basics to get started again.

Back when I perched fished alot - 2013 to 2017 it was hard to beat gary light or right in front of the ditch in late march to mid april.  Have to figure out the depths as it changes year to year and day to day.  Else the summer off the dunes from the port to MC.  Sometimes just have to search them out on sonar and then start fishing.
Boatless!

Don't forget the Cal Park area. It has them all winter. They don't go that far when they come out.

Back in the day I used to fish off of the rocks at the now gone ComEd generating plant. Caught a lot of fish back there.
Are there any specific techniques being used nowadays? Bait? We used minnows and crawfish tails back then on a double hook setup. Has anything changed?

Not much has changed with technique

About the biggest thing is that May/June typically isn't nearly as good as it used to be

July/August/Sept is more of the prime time now, and even into October some years

It’s a lot harder to find a bait shop these days...

And speaking of being harder to find bait shops, I've heard of great success by guys using perch/fly rigs tipped with maggots or wax worms, rather than minnows. On both Lake Erie and Lake Michigan

Intending to try that out this summer. Cuts down minnow costs and the pain of finding minnows and keeping them alive

We use a lot of plastics with great success. Lake Michigan perch aren’t afraid of anything especially the bigger ones !

Another good mainstay is the use of small popcorn shrimp. You can buy them in the freezer section of any store. I keep them on my boat all summer when I am salmon fishing. Because when I see the crowd of boats I know there’s perch to be had. If I don’t use them they just go back in the freezer till the next weekend. Perch love them.

Looked like County Line Bait on Route 6, north side of Valpo across from the Hospital again.  Drove by there yesterday and it looked open.  KK
