Finally made it out to perch fish this morning, launching from Portage. Much to our surprise "fog" was with us on the drive in and boating out to Gary Light. We decided to slow and troll near West Beach due to the fog. Setting lines with three orange dodgers with flies and a pink courage flicker shad. With in 10 minutes flat line went off netting a nice fat 24" coho. 5 minutes later other flat line ripped off getting the large coho/steelhead to the boat when the line from the dodger to the fly snapped. Biggie got away.
Fog cleared shortly after our 2 hits so we pulled lines. Headed out to our perch waypoints. The waves were around 2ft but did get better as day went on. Ended up locating a spot near our marks from previous expeditions and started to fill the box. Unfortunately after 21 mainly jumbos my batteries to my trolling motor fell below a charged level not allowing us to spot lock anymore. Tried drifting but no go. Had to call it. Sad.
First time out perching was a blast with my crew, Ddude and Jan Jan.

Be safe

Great to get a good perch report!  Looks like some quality fish

I can't believe I ever fished without a spot lock trolling motor... it's a game changer for sure when you are perch fishing

WOW!  Great fish!

Just an FYI...I do not believe there is some written big lake rule anywhere that you can't actually use your old school anchor and perch fish anymore!  It wouldn't hurt to try that when you are on fish that thick...it still works btw, and anyone that tries to tell you otherwise is crazy, especially if you are on a big pile of fish.  Spot-lock is great, but old school methods still work too :-)  Technology seems to spoil us these days, that's for sure.  And yes, I'm a hater: I don't have spot lock to hang with the cool kids at school!

Spot on, Whalerman! I have spot-lock and use it to the fullest,
But as of a couple of years ago it didn’t exist in my fishing world. That said, you can bet your fishing hot spot I have that river anchor in the boat with plenty of line at the ready in the event spot lock isn’t up to the task. And that anchor? It never breaks down!! Technology? Too often glitches of some kind occur.
