The weather man sure threw us a surprise today, eh? Like I told the lady that called about a midweek trip last night, "Who knows about the weather after this weekend? You know the "A" Team meteorologists don't work on three-day holiday weekends, especially July 4th weekend. They probably left the janitors in charge and told them to have fun."

Luckily, after a slow bite for myself anyway over by "west" on Saturday, I decided to go east. Once past the Port of Indiana wall, I knew the janitor's forecast was a bit off so I headed way east, like almost to the 00s and in 95 feet of water. That meant I could troll mostly with the waves so we did and basically did a few zigs and zags staying in 95 to 105 feet of water all the way back to the IL/MI line. By then we'd caught a steelhead and five lakers. Better than that, neither mama or 11 year old son puked. (My customers - my wife and son would have both puked.)

By quitting time the waves had subsided to two footers making the 14 mile run back to the Ditch mostly painless.

Not much salmon action over that way but the few other boats in the zone reported decent steelhead action. I had only one other non-trout bite, that being on a meat rig running 150' on a wire diver. Could have been anything, ended up nothing.

Fellow in a 16 footer who launched next to me came in at the same time. He'd stayed in close and caught 2 steelhead in 30 feet of water.

I'm going to a parade tomorrow but out mid-week so let's see some reports from you guys out on the 4th to get me all confused for Tuesday!

I heard it got pretty rough out there. Winds have been calm all day inshore.
Boatless!

A friend of mine is a member on captainsreport site and I think Capt. John is supposed to post there for the paying members exclusively. He hasn't posted anything lately at all that was detailed, and nothing from the weekend as of yet he told me? I thought they were supposed to post daily on that site for the members, but I could be wrong... Maybe he's on a hot bite and keeping it quiet!!!! ;)

Capt Ralph will be putting up a report tonight or tomorrow he said on Facebook (on captainsreport). I am not a member so I don't get the info or know how often they are supposed to post but for the money you pay a year they should be posting whenever they go out (IMHO).

i believe they try to post once or twice a week. They are good accurate posts it's a very helpful website to become apart of.

I was at the Capt Ralph Seminar at the beginning of the year and Capt John actually sat at our table. They both gave a bunch of good info at that so I imagine the report would be really good also. Ralph is pretty good about sharing info but mostly keeps it to the captainreport (as I would suspect). I would become a member but right now the money is going into getting the boat rigged and stuff.

One can't go wrong with on the water reports from 3 very good captains on our side of the lake. Ralph, John and Sleziak.
