The good news is, once you hit a critical mass of fishing gear, they have a lot harder time telling if you have bought new gear or not :)

Right! I'm there, now... wasn't then.... I sure am glad I'll be dead after I die. I'd hate to have to organize the "yard sale" to get rid of my "stuff."

The key is to buy some used gear and make sure she knows you got it pennies on the dollar. She won't know the differance between new and used so when she sees the stash you can reassure her that you got a great deal, stole the gear from someone getting out. Has worked for me so far. Make sure she actually witnesses you buying the used gear. Hell you can even ask her how many pairs of boots / shoes she bought used for pennies on the dollar? Not to mention Coach purses. Shuts her up every time. Lol

You know the funniest part of all our stories? We're dumb enough to put it in writing!!! You know you have a buddy or brother that reads this stuff & thinks it would be hilarious to show our wife's. Can you say busted?

LOL......... I am a lucky one here. When my wife and I started dating, we fished and she drove the truck down ditch lines for me when I was trapping. Today I always tell her that it was bought for you, and would of got one in pink if they had it. Then I get the LOOK............ You guys know that look!!!!!!! Then I quickly explain to her thats why you have the biggest king, steelhead, and walleye in the family. Because I care enough for you to get you good equipment. does she belive it? :pinch: Heck no, but it still works. Everyone have a great Thanksgiving Holiday. ;)

Don't try the "you buy shoes" ploy! Evidently, wives don't think shoes and fishing tackle are equivalent purchases. I tried it and got more grief than if I'd just owned up to my own gear addiction. The word, NEEDING, seems to mean two completely different things in the Mars and Venus world. A guy NEEDING a new downrigger rod is not at all the same concept as a wife NEEDING a new pair of shoes. I don't know the difference, I just know the outcome of confrontation where the two NEEDS are being discussed won't end in a stand-off.

Besides we all know a new downrigger rod is far more important than a new pair of mauve-colored pumps.

I hope my wife is smart enough to auction off my goodies before selling it off at a yard sale. I guess better yet would be me auctioning off my stuff and getting to buy something with the money myself. I have been to auctions where items sold for the price of new. However, it will make me flip over in my coffin to think that my salmon fishing gear would be getting used by some guy fishing for catfish. I hope you guys all carpool down to Elberfeld and buy up all my gear when I am gone.

Update
Well since I got busted and had promised my wife a new kitchen 4 years ago. This is what happened. New complete kitchen with appliances new living room and hallway, with new furnace and central ac. I think she got the better deal. This all cost me more than any of the gear I have bought besides for the boat.
It's better to ask forgiveness than for permission.
