I was planning on fishing tomorrow, I hope the ditch is open to boat traffic.

I just saw this via the Times website. This shocks me!!! How can things like this still happen. I really hope it was minimal. I was going to get out on Friday morning, but we shall see now. Would it even be safe to eat the fish around here for awhile??

Was just about to share this as well. Ridiculous! Should be some good 'ol contaminants in our fish for a bit. Perfect!

According to Coast Guard Michigan City, Burns Ditch is presently closed by the EPA.

Ughhhhhh this can't be good. I don't even know how they can detect and clean that stuff, I don't believe it floats like oil where you can skim it and contain it...not good at all

No this is not good, I hope they hold the people responsible for this accident responsible for their actions. I guess I will be fishing inland for a while. I have been fishing the ditch quite alot in the last 3 years both onshore and a boat. I hate to see this happen. Hold them accountable for what they have done !!!!!!!!

Thats not good. It is hexavalent chromium that got spilled into the ditch. This is the same stuff I talked about in a earlier thread.

I worked there for 35 years and was a operator for their chrome line. This isn't the first spill of this kind. But, its never been so bad that the coasties closed off the ditch. It is dirty brown in color and with the water high and flowing I have no idea how they intend to contain and clean. Hexavalent chrome is one of the worst cancer causing elements known to man. If it gets deposited onto the beach in the area it wil have a distinct oily black,brown film line when washed up onto the sand. Wondered if it started on a midnight turn? Thats when the others mostly happened. They (feds) will have one heck of a federal fine to hit them.
