Fished 7/5 and 7/6 out of Portage. I am late getting the report out but here goes anyway. Wednesday afternoon the Wreck area was calm and and a lot of fish were around. Almost no boat traffic either. Got a limit of coho and a couple of lakers thrown back in. I caught fish on riggers, dipsies, and lines on boards. Both 150 coppers and 5 color lead took a fish or two. The rest fell to the riggers and the braid dipsies. Meat rig on a dipsy took a couple of fish and the rest came on tuna baits and spoons on the riggers. Spoons also took fish on the board rods. riggers were set 35 back and 35 and 45 down. The dipsies were on a 2 setting and 55 and 85 down. Fish came in pairs seemed like. Not doubles but in quick order.

7/5 Thursday we started fishing at the ditch mouth for steelhead. I got one rod set on a board with a custom painted thinfin and it went off in just a minute. Landed a nice 6 pounder. Set a rod on the other side of the boat with a custom painted j13 and was setting line # 4 when the j13 went off. It was a big one that my friend that I brought up fought and ultimately lost near the boat. Fished another hour and a half with 0 hits and the move to the wreck was on. That is where my day went to hell. Pulled in the lines and blasted off to the wreck. About a mile later my buddy says there is something wrong with a rigger. Seems I left a ball hanging. It twisted up some cable and twisted the snubber until it broke and I donated a 8 pounder and a new release clip to Davey Jones locker leaving me with one working rigger. This was screw up # 2, number 1 was I left the Garmin fishfinder in the truck and had to back and get it. Number 4 issue was a 10 or so pou nd laker takes my new favorite spoon on a 5 color rod. Got him to the back of the boat and he then went nuts and got into the rigger cable. I get it away and about netted and he breaks the line and sinks with my spoon in his mouth. Its gone which brings us back to number 3. I left the other matching new favorite spoon at home. The number 5 stink a roo was I had a flat line go off with a blue dolphin mag DW spoon on it. Fought the fish for a while and was taking line from me. The line went slack. It got off. Reeled up the line to find the the split ring and hook where missing. Anyway we caught more coho and another laker. No fish on the meat rigs this time all the other fish came on my "Rotten Banana" super bait and a monkey puke spoon. Here is a pic of the baits.

Yea Don, some of us were working lol. Dropping a ball has to suck. Believe it or not, I'm actually plus one on my boat. One evening a couple years back when there were actually kings around I snagged a downrigger ball with a j-plug right in the mouth of the Ditch. I can't believe I got it up and in.

Good thing was that as captain of the boat I reserved my right to cuss like a sailor and whine about the rest of the day.

Seeing you at the fish cleaning station was the highlight of the trip. My buddy Brad was wondering why we were only talking to you though.
