I thought the same thing last week and ended up on the pier at MC. Fished spawn and tossed lures for 4hrs. Manages 1 whitefish and 1 small steelhead. Was surprised I didn’t catch any coho. It’s worth a shot, even if the coho aren’t there, steelies, Browns, and lakers are all in the mix. Worst case scenario you freshen up your gas and the batteries get a little charge on them.

Trolled around Gary light and down the wall today
And not a bump did mark some small bait balls
Then trolled down the reef and back except the west end we’re there we’re three boats jigging for lake trout I think.
Not a bump and no marks.
But it sure was nice out and spend some time with the daughter.
Priceless :)

Thanks for the post. I ended up taking a ride out to 87th to try for perch from shore. Nothing happening, very very dirty water nobody I saw caught a thing in the 1.5hrs I was out.

Nice to get out. At this time of year the cohos are temperature driven and as the lake cools, north to south the whole "flock" of 2 year old 'hos are pushed to the southern end of the lake. However, take a look at the current lake surface temps and you will see the middle of the lake is warmer than the nearshore areas. No reason for them to come in close to shore by Gary, Portage, Michigan City.

That reverses in February (or early March) when our shallows warm prior to the mid-lake waters warming. Here come the cohos! I've fished in early December nearshore for naught, but moved offshore to 120 feet and caught limits of "next year's" coho. Takes a special day.

Mike, you should write that up in an article. Might keep a boat or two out of the discharges and mudlines I want to fish.
